Motorcyclist dies in head-on collision in Hardin County

UPDATE, Jan. 9 at 2:30 p.m.: Dec. 29, 2016, at approximately 6 p.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 327, near Clearlake Road, in Hardin County that killed 44-year-old Shahn Eric Waltmon of Silsbee. Preliminary reports indicated that the motorcycle that Waltmon was driving crossed the center line into oncoming traffic and was struck by a Jeep.

After further investigation, troopers determined that the Jeep, driven by 19-year-old Matthew Sharp of Silsbee, crossed the center line and traveled into oncoming traffic, striking Waltmon’s motorcycle. Waltmon was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Davis indicated in an email that the "crash evidence is clear," and stated that DPS would work with the Hardin County District Attorney’s office on the ongoing investigation.

A Hardin County accident involving a motorcycle and a Jeep claimed the life of a Silsbee man Dec. 29, reports Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Sgt. Stephanie Davis.

According to a news release from Davis, DPS received a report of a multiple-vehicle crash on Highway 327 near Clearlake Road in Hardin County at approximately 6 p.m. Investigating troopers determined that, for an unknown reason, a Harley-Davidson motorcycle traveling eastbound on Highway 327 crossed the center dividing line of the road and struck a Jeep that had been traveling westbound. Following the head-on collision, the driver of the motorcycle, 44-year-old Shahn Eric Waltmon of Silsbee, was pronounced deceased at the scene by Justice of the Peace T.J. Hall.

The driver of the Jeep, 19-year-old Matthew Sharp of Silsbee, was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Motorists are urged to use caution while traveling on Highway 327 in the area, Davis warned.

The crash investigation is ongoing.
