Multiple vehicle accidents stall traffic during weekend

Many weekend travelers of Interstate 10 in Orange County and across the Louisiana state line experienced delays resulting from two separate multi-vehicle accidents July 17, Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Stephanie Davis reported.

According to Davis, DPS was alerted to both accidents at around the same time, 3:50 p.m.

At approximately 3:50 p.m., DPS received a report of a multiple vehicle crash involving a truck tractor semi-trailer in the westbound lanes of I-10 near the Asher Turnaround in Orange County.

Investigating troopers learned that a 2007 Peterbuilt truck tractor semi-trailer was traveling westbound in the middle lane of Interstate 10. As the driver of the 18-wheeler slowed for stopped traffic, a 2009 Honda Civic the struck the truck from behind. The driver of the Honda, 27-year-old Steven Collins of Seabrook, was transported by ambulance to Baptist Hospital in Beaumont. His injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, reported Davis. The driver of the 18-wheeler, Randall Johnson, 49, of DeBerry, Texas, was not injured in the crash.

Due to the crash, westbound lanes of Interstate 10 were closed for about an hour. Collins was issued a traffic citation for failure to control speed.

At the same time troopers were investigating the crash near Asher Turnaround, the Louisiana State Police also notified DPS of a multiple vehicle crash on Interstate 10 near the Texas-Louisiana border.

The crash, reportedly involving eight vehicles, occurred in the eastbound traffic lanes near mile marker 1 in Louisiana. LSP was investigating the accident and urged motorists to use caution and to stay alert for stopped traffic as the traveled from Texas into Louisiana on Interstate 10. LSP also suggested motorists find alternate travel routes as they cleared the wreck. Lanes reopened after about an hour, DPS reported.
