Murder-suicide: Port Neches police investigate shooting deaths

Police in Port Neches are investigating an apparent murder-suicide, reports Police Chief Paul Lemoine.

According to a news release from Lemoine, officers with the Port Neches Police Department responded to the Ridgewood Apartments at 699 Ridgewood Dr. in reference to a welfare concern at 12:10 p.m. on Oct. 22. A caller from Arkansas was trying to contact his father at that location for the past couple of days.

Officers arrived and attempted to get an answer at the door without success. They then made a forced entry into the apartment and located a 64-year-old male, identified as Robert Curtis Evans, and a 60-year-old female, identified as his wife, Cheryl Ann Evans, in the bedroom deceased. Both victims appeared to suffer from gunshot wounds, and it appeared they had been deceased for at least a day. Justice of the Peace Marc DeRouen conducted the inquest and ordered autopsies.

Preliminary investigation determined that the female subject shot the male subject and then shot herself, Lemoine reported. Officers recovered a note at the scene and also recovered a .38 caliber revolver next to Cheryl Evans. Lemoine stated there had been no history of domestic disturbances reported at the residence, and police had received a single minor, non-domestic call there in 2015, but nothing else. There were no signs of forced entry into the apartment, according to the chief.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday morning, Oct. 25.
