Police in Nederland report a 2-year-old child died from drowning after he apparently snuck outside his home and entered the family pool on Aug. 1.

According to a news release from the Nederland Police Department, officers and Fire-Rescue personnel responded to a residence in the 1000 block of N. 13th Street in Nederland in reference to an unresponsive child at 8:18 p.m. on Monday. Upon arrival to the residence, they learned that a 2-year-old boy, identified as Greyson Paul Meche of Nederland, had gotten out of the residence by unlocking a back door and climbing into an above-ground pool located in the back yard.

Police believe that the family was in the process of getting ready to swim when the child left the residence. His mother found him in the pool after seeing the back door open. The mother pulled him from the pool, and his father began CPR until the arrival of emergency personnel. Acadian EMS transported the young boy to the Southeast Texas Medical Center where they attempted to resuscitate him. He was pronounced deceased at 9:02 p.m.

The accident remains under investigation; however, police say that, at this time, there are no signs of neglect or foul play.

Judge Brad Burnett is conducting an inquest.
