Nerderland store clerk shot during robbery
A liquor store clerk is in stable condition at St. Elizabeth Hospital after what Nederland Police say was an aggravated robbery and assault with a deadly weapon.
Saturday night, Nov. 16, around 8:30 p.m., Nederland police responded to Twin City Liquor at 507 N. Highway 347 in Nederland to discover 52-year-old Siraj Thobni suffering from a single gunshot wound to the upper right chest and shoulder area. Thobni was conscious and was able to speak with officers at the scene, according to a Nederland Police Department press release. He was later transported to St. Elizabeth by ambulance.
Video obtained from the scene shows what appears to be a white male entering the store wearing a camouflage hoodie and brandishing a silver handgun. The suspect appears to say something to the victim and then fires the shot, striking him. The victim then opens the cash drawer and the suspect reaches across the counter, removing an undetermined amount of cash. According to the press release, police believe the suspect then fled the scene in an unidentified vehicle.
Nederland Police Chief Darrell Bush said investigators are unsure if there was a second suspect acting as a getaway driver but have received some leads since the robbery that he believes will help police locate the suspect.
“The night we released the video, we started getting calls from different citizens saying who they thought it was,” Bush said. “We just started running down leads on it and we’ve got a couple that may pan out pretty well for us.”
The suspect is described as a white male between the ages of 25-35, approximately 6 feet tall, 175-185 pounds with a sandy colored and possible slight beard on his chin.
Bush said Thobni underwent surgery and is in stable condition.
Anyone with information about the identity of the suspect is asked to call the Nederland Police Department at (409) 722-4965.
