Officer-involved shooting in Beaumont

A Beaumont police officer has been placed on administrative leave following a fatal shooting over the weekend, the Beaumont Police Department reports.

According to a news release from BPD, dispatch received a call in reference to an auto theft suspect at a residence in the 600 block of 23rd street just after 4:30 p.m. on March 5. Responding officers were advised that the suspect was armed.

As the officers were on scene at the location, the armed suspect, later identified as Herbert Ballance, 22, of Beaumont, exited the residence and confronted them. An officer at the scene fired his weapon, striking Ballance, who was pronounced deceased at the scene. 

The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave per police policy. The investigation is ongoing.
