Officers bust pot-growing house in Pinehurst

Pinehurst officers Leonard Roff and Kirk Fregia responded to a 9-1-1 hang-up call in the 3000 block of Old Castle Dr. on Sunday, May 20, shortly after 1 pm. to find a possible stroke victim and a highly cultivated marijuana farm, Pinehurst Police Chief Fred Hanauer reports.

“Upon entering the residence, they were overwhelmed by the odor of what they believed to be marijuana in its raw form,” Hanauer reported of the investigating officers, who later called Hanauer to the scene for assistance. “They also observed drug paraphernalia within the residence. The resident owner, whose name has not been released, was transported to a Beaumont hospital with symptoms of a stroke.

“Officers on scene soon discovered a room dedicated to the growth and cultivation of marijuana.”

According to the police chief, six large marijuana plants were discovered growing within the residence in a portable green house that was equipped with growth lights, ventilation fans, fertilizer, bottled water for irrigation, portable air conditioners and literature, including ledgers outlining the growth of the plants and harvest times. Also discovered in the residence were seeds for several types of “designer marijuana” plants originating in Amsterdam and several bags of marijuana already harvested from previous plants.

In addition to the marijuana and the components of the green house, officers also seized three weapons and a computer. Hanauer said he has “never seen such an elaborate inside operation in this area.”

The homeowner, according to Hanauer, will be charged with possession of marijuana, a third degree felony based on the amount of marihuana recovered from the property.  If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
