One arrested, another flees in Orange County bust

One man was arrested and another facing drug charges after Orange County Sheriff’s deputies discovered large quantities of narcotics during a traffics stop Monday morning, June 10.

According to a press release from the OCSO, deputies initiated a traffic stop on Interstate 10 east near mile marker 864 at approximately 1 a.m. During the search of the vehicle, deputies located a large quantity of synthetic marijuana, white powder believed by investigators to be cocaine, and two 16-ounce bottles, which contained liquid codeine.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as 49-year-old George Woods of Glynn, La.  The front seat passenger was identified as 36-year-old Joe Edward Jones Junior of Port Allen, La.

While deputies were interviewing the suspects, Joe Jones reportedly fled on foot from the vehicle and into the wooded area adjacent to Interstate 10. A lengthy search of the area proved fruitless, and Jones was not located. The driver of the vehicle, George Woods was arrested for third-degree felony possession of liquid codeine and possession of synthetic marijuana, a state jail felony. Deputies transported Woods to the Orange County Correctional Facility, and bonds were set at $70000. Woods has since posted bond.

Charges against Joe Edward Jones Jr. are pending, according to OCSO.

“Sheriff Merritt and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office will continue to diligently combat the drug activities that occur in the neighborhoods and other areas of Orange County,” the release read. If you have any information about criminal activities please contact the Sheriff’s Office at (409) 883-2612.
