One dead after two-vehicle accident near airport

One person is dead as the result of a two-vehicle accident this morning, Trooper Stephanie Davis reports.

According to a news release from DPS, troopers were dispatched to West Port Arthur Road at South Garden Road in Jefferson County at approximately 5:45 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22. The investigation is in its preliminary stages and more information will be released as it becomes available, Trooper Davis reports.

Update from DPS:

At approximately 5:45 a.m., there was a two-vehicle crash on W. Port Arthur Road at S. Garden Road in Jefferson county.  The crash involved a Triangle Waste Solutions of Port Arthur trash truck and a Toyota truck towing a small fishing boat. The trash truck was traveling northbound on W. Port Arthur Road in the inside (left) lane.  The Toyota truck was traveling southbound on W. Port Arthur Road in the inside (left) lane.  The driver of the Toyota drifted into the northbound traffic lane and struck the trash truck head-on. The passenger in the Toyota truck, 28 year old Cuong Nguyen of Beaumont, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. Nguyen was pronounced dead at the scene.  The driver of the Toyota, 22 year old Canh Nguyen of Beaumont, was transported to St. Elizabeth hospital with non life-threatening injuries.  Cuong and Canh were brothers.  The driver of the trash truck, 55-year-old Donald Winfrey of Beaumont, was transported to The Medical Center of Southeast Texas with non life-threatening injuries. After the collision, motor oil was spilled on the roadway. The Texas Department of Transportation has closed the roadway to remove the oil from the highway.  The roadway is expected to remain closed until Noon today.  All motorists should avoid this area until the roadway reopens. This is an ongoing crash investigation.
