Phone scam targets elderly

A scammer identifying himself as a sheriff's deputy is targeting the elderly in Jefferson County, the sheriff's office reports.

According to a news release, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous complaints on this date, May 2, of an individual calling elderly residents and identifying himself as a member of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. The caller is identifying himself as LT. William Hall Badge #9937. He is advising the recipient that they have a warrant for arrest outstanding due to not appearing for jury duty. The fictitious deputy states that unless the caller makes payment within the hour, he will come to their residence and arrest them. The caller advises that payment must be made via Money Order in the amount of $100.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office does not have Lt. William Holder employed within our organization. This is a phone scam, deputies report.
