Pickup truck strikes two teens in Orange County

Two Orange County teens were injured after being struck by a pickup truck on the evening of July 9, according to Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Stephanie Davis.

According to Davis, DPS received a report of an auto-pedestrian crash on Cajun Way near Strong Road in Orange County at approximately 8:00p.m. Responding troopers learned that a 2000 Ford pickup truck traveling westbound on Cajun Way struck two pedestrians who were walking east, reportedly walking a dog. The two pedestrians, both teenage girls, were struck by the vehicles's passenger-side door mirror, reported Davis.

The driver of the Ford told troopers that her vision was obscured by the sun, and she did not see the pedestrians. When she noticed the two girls, she tried to swerve to the left to avoid striking them, but the door mirror struck them both.

Samantha Bethal, 18, of Orange was transported by ambulance to St. Elizabeth's Hospital with injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening.  The second pedestrian, 14, was transported by medical helicopter to UTMB in Galveston with serious injuries.

The driver of the Ford, 17-year-old Sarah Jean Lafleur of Orange, was not injured.

This is an ongoing crash investigation, and troopers are working to determine the exact factors that contributed to this crash.
