Police arrest suspect evading arrest in stolen car

Police in Beaumont arrested a 26-year-old Port Arthur man for allegedly stealing a car and then leading officers on a foot-chase through a local neighborhood, Beaumont Police Department Carol Riley reports.

According to Riley, on September 18 at 9:40 a.m., an officer initiated a traffic stop on a 2006 silver Chevy Impala at Newfield and South Major Drive for speeding on College Street. During the stop, the driver gave the officer a fictitious name, and then, when the officer went back to the vehicle, fled the scene. The suspect reportedly drove to Landis and into an alleyway behind the 9200 block of Mapes. He then abandoned the car Riley reported, and fled on foot.

Officers eventually located the suspect behind a house in the 9400 block of Landis.  He was taken into custody and identified as Milton Joe Harris of Port Arthur. Upon further investigation, stated Riley,  it was learned that Harris had taken the car from an address on Mapes Street while the owner was asleep. The owner of the car filed unauthorized use of a motor vehicle charges.

Harris was transported to Jefferson County Correctional Facility and booked in for Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Evading Detention with a Motor Vehicle, Failure to Identify and traffic warrants.
