Police find toddler wandering storage facility as mother sleeps

Meagan Lonion

Police in Pinehurst arrested a local woman March 1 after discovering her toddler wandering around a storage facility unattended as the allegedly intoxicated mother slept in a unit there.

In a news release, Pinehurst Police Chief Fred Hanauer III said Officer K. Norton was dispatched to a mini storage facility located in the 3500 block of West Park at approximately 1:45 p.m. in reference to suspicious circumstances. He found a white male and a white female asleep inside one of the storage units while a 2-year-old child walked around the grounds. The white female, later identified as Meagan Danielle Lonion, 22, of Orange, was awakened and found to be intoxicated on an unknown substance, police reported. She was arrested for Public Intoxication.

Once she got to the Orange County Jail, Lonion found herself in even more trouble when was found to be in possession of a white crystal-like substance believed to be crystal methamphetamine. She was subsequently charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, Penalty Group 1, a State Jail Felony. If convicted, she faces 6 months to 2 years in a State Jail and a $10,000 fine.

Due to the extreme state of his intoxication, the white male was transported by ambulance to Baptist Hospital in Orange. Child Protection Services was contacted, and the child was released to a family member.
