Police are searching for the driver of a vehicle that struck and killed a Vidor man June 25, said Vidor Police Chief Dave Shows.

Vidor resident Steven Jarnigan, 22, died as a result of injuries sustained in an accident with an unknown vehicle. Jarnigan was discovered deceased on the Interstate 10 westbound service road near Oakland Street at shortly after 11 p.m. The vehicle that struck him left the scene. The driver of another vehicle found Jarnigan and called police.

"The person who called us was not the person who struck him," Shows said. "We're hoping the driver (involved in the accident) will have second thoughts. We have evidence that the driver probably panicked. We would really like the driver to come forward."

According to Shows, the Orange County Sheriff's Office received reports earlier in the evening that a man was walking in the lanes of the road, but deputies responding to the reports were unable to locate anyone at the reported location. The service road in the area around Oakland Street is quite dark, Shows said, which may have contributed to the accident.

Police are examining evidence located at the scene, vehicle parts collected from the scene of the accident, and looking for possible witnesses. Shows asks that anyone with information regarding the incident or the identity of the driver call the Vidor Police Department at (409) 769-4561. Detective James Blankenship is the lead investigator on the case.
