Police investigate robbery, kidnapping

Police are still searching for a man they say kidnapped a woman at the Petro Truck Stop on Walden Road in Beaumont.

According to a BPD press release, at about 5:20 a.m. Thursday Jan 3., police responded to the truck stop to find the woman’s friend, a 45-year-old Houston man, distraught and telling police his truck had been taken, along with the 33-year-old woman, by a man wielding a handgun.

The victim is a Hispanic female 5-foot-5 in height, weighs 130 pounds, has shoulder-length black hair and was wearing blue jeans and a turquoise jacket at the time of her abduction, according to the press release.

The vehicle is described as a red 2008 Dodge dually with the license plate 16GYJ9, the press release said.

Officer Joe Ornelas of BPD said the kidnapping is still in the early stages of the investigation.

“They’re searching high and low,” Ornelas said Thursday morning. “A special assignment unit is assigned to it.”

Ornelas said the suspect, an African-American male in his mid-30s, might have decided to take what would have been a robbery a step further.

“It sounds like a robbery that went bad,” he said.
