Police peacefully negotiate hostage situation in Port Arthur

Police and SWAT team officers in Port Arthur peacefully negotiated a hostage situation at a residence there May 18 and arrested one man, reports the Port Arthur Police Department (PAPD).

According to a statement from spokesperson LaRisa Carpenter, officers conducting a burglary investigation identified, detained and arrested a suspect, 38-year-old Christopher James Simpson. Officers reportedly witnessed the suspect carrying a television into the residence at 2426 11th St. and secured the perimeter of the property.

Family members of the suspect advised that Simpson was holding his girlfriend against her will inside the home. Port Arthur SWAT was called to the scene along with the PAPD Hostage Negotiation Team. Communications with the suspect was established, and after approximately four hours of negotiation the hostage was released from the home without physical injury. A short time later the suspect voluntarily surrendered and was taken into custody. Simpson was then transported to the Jefferson County Correctional Facility and booked for unlawful restraint.
