Police pursuit results in accident; officer injured

A police pursuit that began in Pinehurst and continued into Harris County resulted in an accident and injured a peace officer in the early morning hours of Jan. 27, reports the Pinehurst Police Department.

At 1:14 a.m., Pinehurst Police Officer Leonard Roff observed a "suspicious vehicle" in the 1900 block of Strickland Drive. According to Roff, the driver of the vehicle made an illegal turn directly in front of his police vehicle. Roff reports that when he attempted to stop the offending vehicle, the driver refused to pull over and a pursuit ensued.

Roff chased the silver, 2012 Honda 4-door passenger car, discovered to be registered in Port Arthur, south on MLK, twisting and turning through city streets, eventually traveling from Highway 12 through the city of Vidor to Interstate 10 westbound toward Beaumont. Other officers joined in the pursuit. As units approached Ford Park, Roff was forced to exit reportedly due to a fatal accident being investigated by the Beaumont Police Department. As he drive onto the service road, he failed to negotiate a curve and lost control of the vehicle. The 2011 Dodge Ram pickup truck left the roadway near the South Major Drive overpass at Interstate 10, struck a sign and came to rest in a small grove of trees.

Officer Roff reportedly suffered minor cuts and bruises as a result of the impact and broken glass. he was transported via ambulance to Baptist Hospital in Beaumont where he was treated and released, reports PPD. The vehicle is believed to be a total loss.

Multiple officers pursued the suspect vehicle all the way into Harris County, but they were unable to stop the car. The suspect remains at large, although police report a tentative identification has been made. Incidentally, reports PPD, the silver 2012 Honda is the same vehicle believed to have been involved in an earlier pursuit in Port Arthur. According to the information from PPD, officers in Port Arthur were pursuing the vehicle 45 minutes prior, following a report of an aggravated assault involving an assault rifle.
