Police recover live grenade at GI Surplus store


Police in Beaumont recovered a live grenade from the GI Surplus store in the 5700 block of College Street on Sept. 14 when a man asked about the explosive item at the store after finding it while cleaning out his uncle's apartment, according the Beaumont Police Department.

According to the news release from BPD, officers responded to a call from the store at about 2 p.m. The grenade was reportedly in the glove box of a pickup truck driven by the man who found the weapon. He told officers he discovered the World War 2 relic inside his 75-year-old uncle's apartment and went to the surplus store to ask if they would take it. He told police his elderly uncle had gotten the grenade from a WWII veteran.

ATF and Beaumont Fire-Rescue units responded to the scene. ATF investigators collected the grenade for proper disposal.
