Police say car thief was on theft spree

A car theft in Port Arthur and subsequent car thefts related to the first carjacking report led Lafayette authorities to arrest one man who ended up stopping at a Louisiana hospital.

According to a news release from the Port Arthur Police Department, officers responded to a report of a carjacking at about 8 p.m. on Feb. 28. Officer determined that two women traveling from Nederland southbound into Port Arthur near 25th Street and Memorial Boulevard were struck from behind by another vehicle. When the driver of the car got out to inspect the damage, police report, the white male driving the vehicle that hit her jumped out and assaulted her. Then, he allegedly jumped into the woman's vehicle and attempted to flee. The woman attempted to stop him from leaving with the female passenger still inside the vehicle. After the female passenger was able to get out of the vehicle, the man reportedly drove away in the woman's car.

Investigators later discovered that the vehicle that struck the woman's car had been reported stolen out of Harris County. The female victim's car involved in the Port Arthur incident was later covered in Liberty County, where the suspect reportedly stole another vehicle. That vehicle was later recovered in Silsbee, where the man allegedly stole yet another vehicle. The final vehicle was recovered at a hospital in Lafayette, La., where the unidentified suspect stopped "for some type of medical treatment," according to the news release.

No other details are being released, and Port Arthur police have withheld the name of the suspect.
