Port Arthur chooses lone finalist for police chief

The City of Port Arthur has chosen former Port Arthur Police Department (PAPD) officer and longtime DEA Special Agent in Charge Tim Duriso as the final, lone candidate in its quest for a new police chief.

Former police chief Patrick Melvin left PAPD in May after about a year and a half in office, starting in October 2016, and the city soon started its search for his replacement. It received numerous applications for the position, and narrowed the options down to its top four. Now, Duriso has been named as the leading chief candidate and will likely begin his new job in early September.

Duriso said he was happy to be “home,” where he began his long career in law enforcement.

“I worked there a little over 10 years,” he shared, adding that he is looking forward to working with the officers in the department. “The personnel out there are great. I know a lot of the officers, and I think there’s a good team there.”

According to Duriso, he loved working in Port Arthur in the past. He eventually went to work for the DEA to fight against narcotics nationwide, successfully pursuing numerous international drug traffickers during his time with the federal agency.

His goal for Port Arthur is “to keep moving forward.”

He intends to focus on fighting crime and connecting with citizens in their neighborhoods to best assess the needs of the community.

“They’re struggling after Harvey,” Duriso said of the people of Port Arthur, who were severely impacted by last year’s hurricane. “I want to see how we can help.”

He said he would also concentrate on mental health issues in the community, training officers to better deal with citizens suffering from mental illness.

Duriso said he is excited about the prospect of becoming the next chief of Port Arthur and invites “qualified individuals” to apply for open police department positions on the city website.
