Port Arthur man arrested for aggravated assault

A 45-year-old Port Arthur man was arrested Tuesday, June 18 for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Port Arthur Police received a call around 7:40 p.m. claiming that a man was seen with a gun at the 700 block of 18th Street in Port Arthur. Several officers responded to the scene and saw a black male walking away from the area. According to a press release by PAPD, when the man spotted the officers, he fled and after a short foot chase was detained.

Around the same time police received a 911 call regarding a shooting at the 500 block of Nederland Ave. approximately three blocks from where the officers detained the black male. Several witnesses gave statements to officers that linked the man to the shooting. He was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and booked in Jefferson County Correctional Facility.

The 50-year-old male victim from Port Arthur received a gunshot wound to the lower leg and was transported by Acadian EMS to St. Mary Hospital.
