Port Arthur man dies in vehicle submerged in canal
A Port Arthur man is dead after the car he was driving went into the canal near the Memorial Boulevard and Highway 73 exit ramp.
Port Arthur police have identified the driver as Mikel Anderson, 26, of Port Arthur.
According to a PAPD press release, around 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, PAPD officers, the Port Arthur Fire Department and EMS units responded to a 911 call of a car in the water near 4600 Memorial Blvd.
Police found a vehicle submerged, and witnesses on the scene said Anderson was still in the vehicle and that at least one witness had entered the water in an attempt to rescue him but was unable to do so, the press release stated.
Port Arthur firefighters were able to get him out of the car and both the fire department and EMS personnel began performing CPR.
Anderson was transported to the Medical Center of Southeast Texas where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy was ordered by Justice of the Peace Brad Burnett.
The death is still under investigation, the PAPD press release states. It has not been determined why the vehicle entered the water.
