Port Arthur man killed while riding bicycle

A man was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle in Port Arthur on Friday morning, Aug. 30, resulting in his death.

Around 9:30 a.m., officers from PAPD responded to a report of a major accident at the 3400 block of Gulfway Drive (Highway 87). Upon investigation, officers discovered that Joseph Simon Jr.,60, was crossing the 3400 block of Gulfway Drive (Highway 87) on his bicycle when he was struck by a white Chevrolet pickup traveling eastbound, according to a PAPD press release. The truck was driven by a 22-year-old Port Arthur resident. Justice of the Peace Marc Derouen pronounced the bicyclist dead at the scene.

At this time, no charges have been filed on the driver of the pickup. The accident reconstruction team and the criminal investigations division are investigating the incident, according to Sgt. Scott Gaspard of the Port Arthur Police Criminal Investigations Division.
