Port Arthur police respond to sexual assault attempt

At approximately 11:38 p.m. Tuesday, officers from the Port Arthur Police Department responded to an attempted aggravated sexual assault at 2500 Gulfway Drive.

The victim informed officers that the suspect approached her on the street and grabbed her. He then began striking the victim in the face, telling her he was going to have sex with her. The victim fought back, broke free and ran for help.

With the description given by the victim, officers were able to find and arrest 48-year-old Arthur Thompson. Thompson was taken to the Jefferson County Jail, where he was booked on a charge of attempted aggravated sexual assault.

The case remains under investigation.
