Salute to officers

Barry Richards

Barry Richards, 34, is a veteran of both the United States Army and Marine Corps. He’s from Long Island but was in Beaumont on Aug. 3 to honor local law enforcement officers.

“I want to let police know I support them,” Richards said before carrying an American flag for three miles through downtown Beaumont.

Richards was coming into town from Baton Rouge on his way to Dallas. He has been running in cities around the United States for about a week and plans to do the same in other towns all over the country to encourage others to support law enforcement officers.

“I’m a one-man support group,” said Richards.

After his run, Richards presented the flag to Beaumont Police Department Assistant Chief Jim Clay in front of the police memorial at the downtown station on College Street before heading to his next destination
