Sex offender arrested for exposing self

Police officers in Pinehurst arrested a registered sex offender living in the city after receiving reports that the man was exposing himself to passersby outside his residence in the 600 block of 28th Street on Friday, April 11, at approximately 6:30 p.m.

According to a news release from the Pinehurst Police Department, Chief Fred R. Hanauer was in the vicinity at the time of the call and was first to respond to the scene. The chief reported that he observed a nude male sitting inside a vehicle near the roadway at the location on 28th. He immediately recognized the man as 49-year-old Mark Dewey Martinez, a registered sex offender who lives at the address, according to the news release.

Hanauer interviewed witnesses who reportedly stated that the subject was walking near the roadway in the front yard of his residence totally nude when the incident was first reported and had exposed himself to a white female and her 6 children, ages 3 to 9, as they arrived at a residence on 28th Street. Martinez, was placed under arrest for Indecency with a Child and transported to the Orange County Jail where he was given a $25,000 bond. Police report that Martinez has since been released after posting bond. Indecency With a Child/Exposure is a 3rd degree felony punishable by two to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Pinehurst currently has six active registered sex offenders within the city limits including Martinez, police report.
