Sheriff's office makes more than a dozen arrests during STEP program

According to a release from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, during the week of June 27 - July 6, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office participated in a Driving While Intoxicated Special Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) targeting intoxicated drivers in Jefferson County. The STEP program was funded by a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation. During this time period, the Jefferson County Deputies working the DWI STEP Program initiated 199 traffic stops for traffic violations. These traffic stops generated:                14      Driving While Intoxicated arrests                20      Citations                  7     Other Arrests                  1     Minor in Possession of Alcohol The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office asks all drivers to continue to drink responsibly and avoid driving after consuming alcoholic beverages in 2011. The average costs of a DWI arrest is $40,000 which includes bond fees, attorney fees, court costs, fines, probation fees and increased insurance costs.
