Shoplifting incident leads to robbery arrest in Orange

A man attempting to steal a can of potato chips and some ice cream was arrested in Orange on Monday, Dec. 16, after fighting with store personnel trying to detain him, police said.

According to a report from OPD, Capt. Garrold Keaton responded to a call regarding a shoplifter who was being detained at Market Basket located at 3709 16th Street in Orange at approximately 1:05 p.m. Upon arrival at the scene, the officer reportedly observed the shoplifting suspect on the ground being held by store employees. Witnesses told police the man had tried to leave the store without paying for a can of cheddar cheese Pringles and a carton of Nestle Crunch Dibs ice bream bites. When the manager approached him, the man returned one of the items and then physically shoved the manager out of his way before attempting to flee on foot, witnesses said. According to the report, one of the store employees had a split lip as a result of the altercation and Weeks was examined by Acadian Ambulance staff before being transported to Baptist Hospital in Orange for treatment of a sprained ankle. Police arrested 36-year-old Anthony Darren Weeks of Orange for robbery and transported him to the Orange County Jail after he was cleared by hospital staff.
