State Rep. Deshotel files for re-election

State Rep. Joe Deshotel

State Representative Joe Deshotel of House District 22, which includes Jefferson County, has filed for re-election.

“It has been an honor to serve my hometown and Southeast Texas in the Texas legislature, and I appreciate the trust and support I receive from the community,” Deshotel said. “I will continue to use my experience and seniority to ensure that Southeast Texas has a seat at the table when important decisions are made that impact our part of the state.”

Among the projects he said he is most proud of is championing local causes at the state capital: “windstorm insurance, protecting our coastal barrier, criminal justice reform, and increasing skills training and job opportunities.”

Deshotel, a Democrat, is currently chair of the Land and Resource Management Committee, co-chair of Joint Interim Committee to Study a Coastal Barrier System, and a member of the Public Education Committee. He said he plans to stay focused on improving the state’s public education system, “particularly early childhood education and continuing work to reduce the burden that high-stakes testing has put on a student’s ability to learn.”
