Superheroes help out in CASA’s Superhero 5K

Co-Chair Diana Nguyen's Superhero Family

CASA of Southeast Texas invited the community to participate in its first annual Superhero 5K and Kid’s Fun Run Saturday, October 13 out at Parkdale Mall. The CASA Superhero 5K was presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, Controlled Fluids Incorporated, Beaumont Bone and Joint Institute, and Suzanne and Don Maloney.

This event helped to increase awareness for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), recruit more volunteer advocates and raise much needed funds to make sure that abused and neglected children do not suffer further in an overburdened and complex child welfare system.

The winners of this family fun-filled day were Morgan Moore, 28, for overall female, and overall male Ryan Kelly, 22. Winners in the Kids Fun Run were overall boy Grant King and overall girl  Robin Houghton. Winning Superhero Costumes were adults Michelle VanDevender as Wonder Woman and Jeremy Fermo as Incredible Hulk, and kids Morgan Miles as Superwoman and Myles Aslin as Robin. The most original was William Gilmore as Dr. Banner/Incredible Hulk.

Families were encouraged to participate with their children by walking, jogging or running the 5K together. The festivities included superhero mask-making, photo booth by Babbi Booths that gave participants four great superhero action shots, and the superhero costume contest.

Casas for CASA Playhouses were on display inside Parkdale Mall from Oct. 13-20 near JC Penny’s. Drawing for playhouses and raffle packages was Oct. 20 inside the mall.

CASA is at 2449 Calder in Beaumont. Call (409) 832-CASA or visit www.casasetx.org.
