A Vidor man has been captured after leading Orange County Sheriff's deputies on a chase that ended with the suspect driving into a culvert while attempting to evade law enforcement officers.

According to a news release from OCSO, on Tuesday, Oct. 07, at about 7:40 a.m., the Bridge City Police Department received a phone call in reference to an attempted stolen vehicle in the 1200 block of Cottage Lane in Orange County, just outside the city limits of Bridge City. An Orange County Sheriff’s deputy responded to the area to meet with the complainant reporting the attempted theft of his vehicle. While in the area of Cottage Lane, the Deputy was flagged down by another person on Cottage Lane who stated that her vehicle had been stolen from her residence within the last 45 minutes. The stolen vehicle was a Buick Enclave equipped with On-Star.

The complainant contacted On-Star, and the vehicle was located in the area of the Bridge City Wal-Mart. The Bridge City Police Department arrived in the area of Wal-Mart and located the suspect still inside the vehicle.  Once the suspect made eye contact with officers, he raced away in the vehicle on Ferry Drive towards FM 1442. The suspect continued to evade officers as he turned northbound on FM 1442 and reached speeds near 100 mph.

A Sheriff’s deputy near FM 1442 and Bessie Heights Road was able to stop and prepare to deploy tire deflation devices. As the suspect neared the parked deputy, he reportedly attempted to go around the tire deflation devices and lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle spun out of control and left the roadway where it struck a culvert and turned over on its side. The suspect was taken into custody with non-life threatening injuries. No citizens or law enforcement personnel were injured during the pursuit.

The suspect was identified as 29-year-old Henry Vincent Caldwell, a white male of Vidor. He was transported to the Baptist Hospital in Orange for treatment and remains in custody. Once he is released from the hospital, he will be booked into the Orange County Jail for Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle and Evading Detention.
