Suspect evades arrest in Jasper County

Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2016, around 7 p.m., the driver of a 2010 Buick passenger vehicle evaded state troopers after being stopped for a speeding violation on US 96 in Jasper County.

A trooper observed a vehicle traveling southbound on US 96 in Buna that appeared to be speeding. The trooper activated his emergency lights and initiated a traffic stop. The driver exited his vehicle and the trooper noticed a bag with an unknown substance hanging from the driver’s pants. The trooper identified the unknown substance as what he believed to be marijuana. The trooper attempted to place the driver under arrest, but the driver resisted arrest and subsequently fled the scene in the vehicle. Another trooper immediately noticed the vehicle and attempted to stop the suspect. The suspect evaded arrest through Jasper and Newton counties until he crashed the vehicle in a ditch on Highway 87 in Newton County. After the crash, the suspect fled on foot and evaded apprehension.

State Troopers were assisted by deputies from Jasper and Newton counties and K9 units from Newton County and Vernon Parrish.

This is an active felony evading arrest case. Troopers, with the assistance of the Criminal Investigation Division of the Texas Department of Public Safety, are working to positively identify the suspect.
