Texas Education Agency initiates Beaumont ISD board transition

From the Texas Education Agency: Commissioner of Education Mike Morath notified leadership in the Beaumont Independent School District on Tuesday, Feb. 6, that the transition from the current appointed Board of Managers to an elected Board of Trustees will begin.

"As part of the transition process," TEA reports, "two elected Board of Trustee members will become part of the Board of Managers."

In a letter to BISD Superintendent John Frossard, members of the current BISD Board of Managers and elected Board of Trustees, Commissioner Morath named elected District 5 Trustee Nathan Cross and elected At-Large Trustee Denise Wallace-Spooner as his initial two appointments "effective immediately."

“The district has demonstrated significant progress and initiated changes in governance and leadership within the district,” Morath wrote in his letter to BISD leadership. “As a result of the progress achieved by the district, the governance of the district will now begin transitioning from the appointed board of managers to the elected board of trustees.”

Information from the TEA identifies the appointment of the BISD Board of Managers as set to expire on Feb. 6, 2020, and Morath will appoint additional Trustees to the Board until that time. The Board of Managers has been in place, according to TEA records, since 2014 - "appointed in the district following two TEA investigations into various Beaumont ISD special education, finance and governance issues."
