On April 20 at about 7:30 a.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) received a report of a motor vehicle crash near Saratoga on FM 770 in Hardin County, Sgt. Stephanie Davis reported.

Initial reports indicated that a Mitsubishi passenger vehicle was traveling southbound on FM 770 followed by a Dodge Durango. For an unknown reason, the driver of the Mitsubishi crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a Dodge pickup truck. In an attempt to avoid the collision, the driver of the Dodge Durango took evasive action to the right, traveled off the roadway and struck a small tree.

The driver of the Mitsubishi and her passenger, a toddler, were both transported by ambulance to St. Elizabeth's hospital. The driver received minor injuries, but the child sustained serious injuries. The driver of the Dodge pickup truck was also transported by ambulance to St. Elizabeth's hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the Dodge Durango was not injured in the crash.

The passenger of the Mitsubishi, a 2-year-old toddler, was initially transported to St. Elizabeth's hospital but later she was transported to Texas Children's Hospital in Houston due to the extent of her head injuries. The child was properly secured in a car seat in the rear passenger position, but the crash impact was to the rear passenger door.

DPS confirmed later that day that the 2-year-old toddler passed away at Texas Children's Hospital.

All information is preliminary as troopers continue to investigate this crash.
