Train derails in Port Arthur, traffic delayed to Sabine Pass

On Jan. 27, the Port Arthur Police Department received a call at 9:34 a.m. regarding a train derailment near the 2100 block of Highway 87, City of Port Arthur PIO LaRisa Carpenter reported.

The train and the first seven cars successfully passed the railroad switch before the next two cars derailed, the City of Port Arthur press release stated.

There were no injuries reported, according to the release, but traffic in and out of Sabine Pass is expected to be impacted for the next few hours while crews work to clear the train from blocking the roadway.

Union Pacific Railroad representatives are handling the incident and DPS is assisting with traffic control in the area, DPS PIO Stephanie Davis reported.

"Motorists are urged to use caution while traveling in the area," Davis wrote in an email. "There is no time estimation as to when the derailed freight car will be removed from the train tracks."
