Two drivers injured while avoiding deer in Angelina County

Monday, Oct. 24, at approximately 7:20 a.m., Texas Department of Public Safety says troopers responded to a two vehicle crash on SH 63 about 9 miles East of Zavalla.

The preliminary crash investigation indicates a 2011 Nissan SUV and a 2014 Peterbilt truck tractor semi-trailer were both traveling East on SH 63. The driver of the Nissan reportedly applied the vehicle brakes to avoid striking a deer and was struck from behind by the Peterbilt.

After being struck by the Peterbilt, the Nissan was forced to the right and off the roadway. The Peterbilt drove off the roadway to the right and overturned and lost ts load of drywall.

The driver of the Nissan was identified as 67-year-old Roger McCarty from Orange, TX. The driver of the Peterbilt was identified as 60-year-old Mike Romoa from Lufkin, TX.

McCarty was transported from the scene to a Jasper hospital for possible treatment. Romo was also transported from the scene to CHI St. Luke’s Hospital in Lufkin for possible treatment.

This crash remains under investigation. No additional information is available at this time.
