Two kilos of cocaine seized

James Wendell Brown

Early Friday morning, a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputy arrested two motorists for possession of two kilograms of cocaine.

Friday, Sept. 21, at about 4:18 a.m., the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation at the 846 Mile Marker on Interstate 10. Both occupants of the vehicle appeared to be very nervous. The deputy asked for consent to search and was given consent by the individual that had rented the vehicle to search the vehicle. The deputy located two kilos of cocaine inside the passenger area of the vehicle.

The two arrested were Stephanie Maysonet Ortiz, 23, of Houston, and James Wendell Brown, 44, of New Orleans. Both were charged with possession of a controlled substance (400 grams or more) a first first degree felony. Bond has been set at $20,000 each.

The cocaine had a street value of approximately $140,000. The investigation is continuing with the assistance of the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). Interstate 10 is one of the main “drug corridors” utilized for the movement of narcotics across the United States.
