Two students hospitalized, struck by SUV

Two Port Arthur ISD students crossing the road while walking to school were struck by an SUV Thursday morning, Jan. 30.

Around 7:45 a.m. PAPD officers were dispatched to 1300 Freeman Ave. in reference to an auto-pedestrian accident involving two Abraham Middle School students who were struck by an SUV in front of Washington Middle School, at the corner of 12th Street and Freeman Avenue.

The driver of the SUV was driving the wrong way on a one-way street, and claimed the sun was in her eyes, according to a PAPD press release.

One of the students was transported to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth Hospital and the second was taken to Christus Hospital St. Mary. Both are recovering from non-life threatening injuries and the driver was cited for multiple offenses, the PAPD press release stated.
