From parking lot barbecues to colorful team spirit, football tailgating is a Texas tradition. At the Lamar-McNeese State game Saturday, Nov. 23, one very special tailgate will serve fans an important and potentially life-saving message about the dangers of drinking and driving

Visiting select college and pro football games around the state, the Texas Department of Transportation’s Fan Van reminds people to make a game plan before kickoff for having a sober ride home after the game, said Sarah Dupre, public information officer for TxDOT Beaumont District.

“The Fan Van allows us to reach Texans directly with a sober ride message, “ said Sarah Dupre, public information officer for TxDOT Beaumont District. “The Fan Van staff members will remind people to plan a sober ride to avoid a DWI and help save lives. They’ll also provide information about the consequences of drinking and driving and will educate people about resources that can help them find a sober ride, such as TxDOT's SoberRides.org website. Fans can play games on-site, and branded footballs will be given out to reinforce the sober ride message. Each event attendee will be asked to pledge not to drink and drive this football season. This pledge will enter attendees in a contest to win one of four donated $500 Best Buy gift cards or the grand prize — a Man Cave of their own.”

The Man Cave features a flat-screen TV, home theater system, a massage chair and a folding poker table, among other prizes. To be eligible, potential winners must pledge not to drink and drive this football season.

In 2012, 1,612 DUI-alcohol traffic crashes occurred in Texas on football game days when a Texas college or professional team was playing, causing 57 deaths.

In Beaumont, there were 10 DUI-alcohol traffic crashes in 2012 on football game days when a Texas college or professional team was playing, compared with 11 alcohol-related traffic crashes in 2011.

The Fan Van will visit Gate 2 of Provost Umphrey Stadium, located at 4561 S MLK Pkwy in Beaumont, Saturday, Nov. 23 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
