In an attempt to flee from police, Puckett jumped from a second-story window, although he was not injured. He was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshalls, who were acting on information gathered in Houston by officers with TDCJ's Office of Inspector General and the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force. Two OIG investigators are in Omaha assisting the U.S. Marshalls.
Jason Clark, pubic information officer with the TDCJ, said, "It's my understanding that while in the Houston area, he managed to get a bus ticket and took the bus from Houston to Nebraska."
Puckett will be extradited back to Texas at which time he will face felony escape charges.
Law enforcement across the state of Texas is searching for an inmate who escaped the Stiles Unit in Beaumont on Wednesday, March 9.
David Puckett, the 27-year-old prisoner, escaped Wednesday evening from the prison by climbing a fence. Video surveillance shows that he cut his left arm on the razor wire while escaping. Jason Clark, public information officer with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, said it is believed Puckett stole a white Chevrolet truck from a business Wednesday evening.
The missing truck was found at an Extended Stay near the medical district in Houston. "The pick-up was found at about 1:40 this morning, relatively near the medical center. After he escaped, we believe he stole the pick-up, drove to the Houston area, then went into St. Luke's Hospital. Then he noticed law enforcement there, turned around and left. We were able to examine surveillance video and determine it was indeed him."
UPDATE: Around 2:45 p.m. Friday, Houston SWAT surrounded Baylor Clinic after receiving a report that Puckett may have been in the facility. Officers searched the premises and around 4:15 p.m. reported that Puckett was not found in the clinic.
The search for Puckett is spanning the entire state, but the focus is now on the Houston area according to Clark. Puckett is serving a 30-year sentence for aggravated assault of a public servant out of Lavaca County. He was received by TDCJ on Feb. 11, 2002.
Puckett is described as being 5'5'' and weighing approximately 155 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes.
