UPDATE: Man found on Orange County side of Neches identified

The man whose body was discovered on the Orange County side of the Neches River on May 5 has been identified as Desmond Gerard O’Hara of Beaumont, according to a news release from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. O’Hara, 35-year-old black male, was reported missing by his family to Beaumont Police Department on Feb. 16, 2013.

Sunday, May 5, at 6 p.m., the Orange County Sheriff’s Office received a call in reference to a human body found in the Neches River near the Purple Heart Bridge. Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Port of Beaumont Police Department, and officers from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call.

Orange County Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 Judge Dunn is conducting the death inquiry and ordered an autopsy. The body was transferred to the Jefferson County Forensic Medical Facility where an autopsy was performed. According to the forensic pathologist, the cause and manner of death were not able to be determined at the time of the autopsy due to the decomposed condition of the victim. The forensic pathologist advised that toxicology and other further testing is going to be done to try to determine cause and manner of death. Identification of the body was sought by releasing images of the distinctive bracelet the man had been wearing.
