UPDATE: Missing man found
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office reports Ricky D. Smith, the man reported missing in Orange County since the early morning hours of Jan. 1, was found safely at home yesterday evening, Jan. 4.
OCSO Criminal Investigator Janois Strause Grizzaffi said at 11 p.m. on Jan. 4 that Smith was safe at the Orange County residence where he is staying.
Smith was reported missing after he abruptly exited the vehicle in which he was a passenger in the morning hours following ringing in the New Year with friends at a Beaumont bar. He left his phone in the vehicle, OCSO stated, and did not return to the vehicle. He had reportedly been drinking and was upset about personal matters when he disappeared. His companions were unable to locate him and reported him missing to authorities.
According to deputies, Smith has disappeared before and is “good in the woods.” Jan. 3, K-9 units tracked Smith’s scent through woods near where he exited the vehicle in which he had been riding. Both units tracked the scent through the woods and back to the roadway, FM 1136. Texas Equusearch went out the following day, Jan. 4, with eight ATVs and four walkers searching for the missing Smith prior to his return home later that evening.
Grizzaffi said Smith’s loved ones told deputies he had been “lost” during the time he was missing.
