UPDATE: Suspect identified in Fannett shooting

The suspect in yesterday’s shooting in Fannett has been identified as 35-year-old Matthew Earl Smith of Hamshire. Smith was charged with murder and is being held on a $1 million bond in relation to the death of 51-year-old Cole Dupuy of Fannett, according to a news release from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the original news release, JCSO dispatch received a call at approximately 1:10 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5, regarding a shooting in the 15000 block of Boondocks Rd. The caller told police a pedestrian, Smith, flagged him down and told the caller he had been involved in a shooting. Smith remained with the caller until deputies arrived.

Upon arrival, deputies discovered 51-year-old Cole Dupuy of Fannett deceased outside the residence. He was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Ray Chesson. Smith was taken into custody and charged with murder. He is being held at the Jefferson County Correctional Facility.
