UPDATE: Woman's body found at hunting lease identified

A woman's body was discovered on the morning of Sunday, December 6, 2015 by deer hunters on a hunting lease off of Highway 326 between Sour Lake and Kountze.

According to Hardin County Sheriff Ed Cain, the woman has been identified as 51-year-old Penny Lee Murphy of Evadale, who was last seen in Beaumont, and reported missing on November 20, 2015. Murphy's body was found partially covered by water in a ditch on the west side of Highway 326, about 2 miles south of Laird Road, alongside a dirt road approximately 50 feet from the highway.

The incident is being treated as a homicide. Sheriff Cain believes Murphy's body was dumped at the site, and could have been there for up to a couple of weeks. There are no more details to be released at this time.

UPDATE: The preliminary autopsy report has been made for Peggy Lee Murphy, the 51-year-old woman whose body was found Sunday morning off of Highway 326 between Sour Lake and Kountze.

According to Hardin County Sheriff Ed Cain, the report shows "bruising of the neck and shoulder, and extensive post-mortem animal activity with greater involvement of the neck."

"The best I can explain that, is when... my investigator was there yesterday, he said that it appeared that an animal of some kind, maybe a buzzard or something like that, had possibly done some damage to the neck area," said Sheriff Cain.

The toxicology report is pending, and at this time, the preliminary cause of death is also "pending further studies."
