UPDATED: DPS releases crash details on Rose City accident that killed four

A crash involving five vehicles killed four people including two children Wednesday evening, Oct. 1 near Asher Turnaround in Rose City.

The accident encompassed the westbound lanes of Interstate 10 and involved two truck-tractor semi-trailers and three passenger vehicles — a 2015 Kenworth truck tractor, a 2003 Volvo truck tractor, a 2011 Kia SUV, a 2002 Dodge truck and a 1994 Ford passenger vehicle, according to Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Stephanie Davis.

Troopers determined that motorists in the westbound lanes were stopped due to construction approximately one mile west of the crash site. The driver of the 2015 Kenworth truck tractor semi-trailer (owned by Stevens Transport), was traveling westbound in the center lane of Interstate 10.  The driver  failed to control speed and struck a stopped 2003 Volvo truck tractor in the rear.  The impact of this collision caused the 2003 Volvo truck tractor to collide with a 2002 Dodge truck that was also stopped in the center lane of Interstate 10, Davis said.

After the 2015 Kenworth truck tractor collided with the 2003 Volvo truck tractor, the driver steered to the right and drove over the 1994 Ford passenger vehicle, which was driven by 30-year-old Luis Alonso Rodriguez Camacho of Mexico.  The 2015 Kenworth continued to the right towards the concrete barrier and the trailer struck the 2011 Kia causing it to become lodged under the trailer.  After the Kia was struck by the trailer, the vehicle caught fire.  The occupants of the 2011 Kia were Glenda Blackwell and two minor children.  The truck tractor semi-trailer continued until it struck the outside concrete barrier and came to rest.

The drivers of both truck tractors were not injured and the driver of the 2002 Dodge truck was not seriously injured during this crash. The driver of the 2011 Kia, 62-year-old Glenda Blackwell of Vidor, was pronounced dead at the scene by Judge Derry Dunn.  The two minor children in the Kia , Connor Roland Beauchamp, 5, and Abigail Grace Goodwin, 2, were also pronounced dead at the scene by Judge Dunn.

Westbound lanes on I-10 into Beaumont were closed from around 9:30 p.m., following the accident, until about 5:30 a.m. Thursday morning, Oct. 2.

Due to the complexity and severity of this crash, the investigating troopers continue to review evidence from the crash scene and collect witness statements. It may take a couple of days for troopers to determine the exact factor or factors that contributed to this fatal crash, Davis said.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
