Vehicle strikes woman in wheelchair near Central Mall

A woman crossing the street in her power wheelchair was critically injured March 3 after being struck by a vehicle near Central Mall in Port Arthur. 

According to the Port Arthur Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 3100 block of F.M. 365 at about 6:20 a.m. in reference to a major motor vehicle accident. Upon arrival, they learned that a woman in an electric wheelchair was crossing the road when a vehicle traveling eastbound struck her, ejecting her from the chair. She was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont in critical condition, PAPD reports. A man who was crossing the road with her was also injured. His injuries appeared not to be life-threatening, according to police. 

The driver of the vehicle was not injured. 

The PAPD Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the incident.
