West Brook booster club honors Judge Flores

As the West Brook High School Bruins football team prepares to take the field Thursday, Oct. 15, against Baytown Sterling at the BISD’s Thomas Stadium, the group’s booster club will honor a special supporter during the pre-game ceremony.

According to Bruins supporter Christine Duhon Gavrelos, the posthumous honoree, Judge G.R. “Lupe” Flores, had been integral to the high school’s program for more than a decade.

“In 2002, Judge Flores began cooking for the West Brook Football Booster Club,” the recognition wording says. “This led to 12 wonderful years of cooking and fundraising for Bruin football, wrestling, powerlifting, Project Graduation, and PTA – as well as dressing as Santa Claus for the band during the annual Sound Power Caravan of Carols, visiting nursing homes, hospitals, and retirement facilities throughout Beaumont. Anything benefiting the students was worthwhile to him.

“Judge Flores was an original founding member of the West Brook Football Booster Club. For years before every home game, the judge could be found right outside the front gates of the Alex Durley Stadium with his barbecue pit selling links as a fundraiser for the Bruin football team. Eventually the booster club partnered with the Forest Park/South Park Lions Club to man the concessions inside Durley stadium, and Flores and his pit moved inside, too, providing links and boudin to raise money for the team.

“Once Bruin football moved to the Thomas Center, Lupe and his famous pit and cooking team continued providing links, boudin, turkey legs, hamburgers, and chicken sandwiches – all in the name of Bruin football.

“Judge Flores was not only our head cook, but was always the ‘go to’ person for sound advice and calm reasoning concerning booster club business. On the rare occasion he was unable to help with a project, he was on the phone to find someone who could help us. His work ethnic was second to none, he never asked anything of anyone that he wasn’t willing to do himself.

“We cannot imagine a football season without him and he will be eternally missed.”

In honor of the longtime Bruin supporter, the booster club established The Judge G.R. “Lupe” Flores Football Scholarship. This $1,000 scholarship will be awarded each year to a West Brook senior football player who embodies the same principles as Judge Flores: love of community, volunteerism, the desire to help others, and dedication to treating everyone with respect, courtesy, and kindness.

The Bruin football team has dedicated this football season in honor of Judge Flores, presenting to his wife and family a framed West Brook Bruin football jersey with the No. 2, honoring Judge Flores’ County Court at Law No. 2. A plaque was also inscribed in Flores’ honor: “For 12 years of unselfish service and dedication to the West Brook Football Booster Club.

“None of our successes would have been possible without you.

“You are forever in our hearts.”
