Woman attacks store clerk after 8-liner "took" her money

A woman in Orange attacked the clerk at the Honey Stop convenience store on Sept. 13 and stole money from behind the counter after reportedly losing her money at an 8-liner machine inside the business, the Orange Police Department reports.

Officer James Roy responded to the scene of the incident at about 11:50 a.m. after receiving a call from the clerk regarding the robbery. The clerk told the officer a woman, identified by police as 23-year-old Brittany Nicole Roberts of Orange, stole $118 in one dollar bills from a cash box behind the counter and then assaulted him. Roy reports that Roberts admitted taking the money. She told him she became upset when an 8-liner machine "took" her money. The clerk refused to refund the woman's cash, so she took matters, and the money from the box, into her own hands. She told police that the clerk grabbed her as she attempted to abscond, so she hit him multiple times. According to the officer, the clerk sustained redness and swelling on the right side of his face from the altercation.

The cash was recovered, Roy reports, and Roberts was arrested for robbery and taken to the Orange County Jail.

OPD Captain Cliff Hargrave said the store, which has several 8-liners, has been robbed before. He said he believes that stores with the amusement redemption machines are at a higher risk of robbery, and suggested people wishing to play the slots go to Louisiana where the payouts are regulated.
