Woman killed in wreck that shut down 69/I-10 interchange

Update: The woman who drove through the median into oncoming traffic around 9:45 this morning succumbed to her wounds at an area hospital. She was identified as 22-year-old Emily Riu of Beaumont.

Previous reporting:

One woman was seriously injured in a wreck that has the Interstate 10/Highway 69 interchange shut off to traffic. According to officers, a woman traveling from Interstate 10 in the westbound lanes collided with a truck. The truck hit the barrier of the overpass on Highway 69 and did not receive any serious injuries.

The car driven by the woman passed through the grassy median between the east and westbound lanes and was struck on the drivers side by a truck traveling northbound. She was transported to the hospital in serious condition. The driver of the westbound truck also went to the hospitals, but his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

Both directions are currently shut down and the Beaumont Police Department is asking citizens in the area to take Washington Boulevard rather than the highway. Officers said they believe it will be a few more hours before all the debris is cleared and lanes are reopened.
