The Texas Education Agency arrived in town Monday, Oct. 28, as part of an on-site investigation into multiple allegations of fraud, fund mismanagement, and civil rights violations at the Beaumont Independent School District.

Voters will notice Proposition 6 on their Nov. 5 Joint Election ballots and will have the option of voting “Yes” or “No.”

If approved by voters statewide, Proposition 6 would create a State Water Implementation Fund using $2 billion from Texas’ rainy-day account. The money would be made available for projects identified in the state’s water plan, which is administered by the Texas Water Development Board with input from local leaders in each region of the state.

Deputies in Hardin County have apprehended a young woman there who reportedly beat a 78-year-old woman with her own cane over the weekend, according to Hardin County Sheriff Ed Cain.

The former president of Port Arthur Chemical and Environmental Services LLC (PACES) has been sentenced to prison for occupational safety crimes that resulted in the death of an employee. Matthew Lawrence Bowman, 41, of Houston, pleaded guilty May 9, 2013, to violating the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSH Act) and making a false statement and was sentenced to 12 months in federal prison Oct. 28 by U.S. District Judge Marcia Crone.

Police say a 44-year-old Beaumont woman is dead after a two-car collision on Monday, Oct. 28, but at least three children were spared in the fatal accident.
